# PG Audit

PG Audit is a PostgreSQL database audit and optimization service.
The service analyzes metadata collected from a PostgreSQL instance and identifies configuration, performance, maintenance, and architectural issues.

## What PG Audit does

- PostgreSQL configuration analysis (postgresql.conf parameters, autovacuum, work_mem, WAL, checkpoint)
- Database schema analysis (primary keys, foreign keys, indexes, partitioning)
- Performance analysis (cache hit ratio, sequential scans, temporary files)
- Maintenance analysis (dead tuples, bloat, statistics freshness, autovacuum effectiveness)
- Problem prioritization by severity (Critical, High, Medium, Low, Info)
- Impact assessment for each finding
- Confidence assessment (deterministic vs statistical rules)
- Remediation recommendations with SQL examples
- Before/After verification via Repeat Check
- Comparison of database states

## What PG Audit does NOT do

- Does NOT automatically modify PostgreSQL
- Does NOT execute remediation SQL automatically (client reviews and applies manually)
- Does NOT require remote administrative access to the server
- Does NOT read table contents or user data
- Does NOT read SQL query text
- Does NOT install extensions
- Does NOT replace a DBA for context-specific problems
- Does NOT claim that every PostgreSQL problem can be solved automatically

## How it works

1. Client runs PG Audit Collector locally on the PostgreSQL server (read-only, no remote admin)
2. Collector gathers technical metadata into one JSON file (audit_data.json)
3. Client can run free Express Audit in browser (JSON stays local, no server upload)
4. For full audit, client sends JSON to expert for analysis
5. Expert runs Analyzer (24+ rules) and produces HTML report + remediation.sql
6. Client reviews SQL, applies on staging first, then production
7. After 30-90 days, client can order Repeat Check to verify results

## Collector

- Public/open-source Python script
- Available on GitHub: https://github.com/pg-audit/pg-audit-collector
- Read-only access (no writes to system tables)
- No superuser required (pg_read_all_stats role sufficient)
- Supports PostgreSQL 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17
- Runs on Linux, macOS, Windows, Docker, cloud (AWS RDS, Cloud SQL, Yandex Managed PostgreSQL)

## Demo

Demonstration uses a controlled test PostgreSQL environment (pgbench on PostgreSQL 16.14, 207 MB database).
It is a product demonstration, NOT a customer case study.
Real customer cases will be published as they appear.

Before state: 11 findings (2 Critical, 3 High, 3 Medium, 1 Low, 2 Info)
After applying remediation.sql: 5 findings (0 Critical, 2 High, 1 Medium, 1 Low, 2 Info)
Comparison: 5 issues resolved, 0 new issues introduced

## Security model

- Collector does not transmit data automatically
- Express Audit runs entirely in browser (no server upload)
- Full Audit requires client to manually send JSON to expert
- No remote admin access, no password sharing, no open ports
- Only metadata is collected (pg_settings, pg_stat_user_tables, pg_class, etc.)
- No table contents, no SQL text, no user data

## Limitations

- Statistical rules require sufficient uptime (24h+ recommended)
- Short uptime findings are marked LOW CONFIDENCE
- Context-specific problems require DBA judgment
- Some recommendations may not apply to specific workloads (DWH vs OLTP)
